NANS PRESIDENT LAUDS RECTOR DR. AWUZIE FOR TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP

The President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Olushola Oladoja has commended the Rector, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr Chioma Irene Awuzie for her transformative leadership which has impacted different facets of the Polytechnic.

Comrade Oladoja made this commendation when he led a delegation of NANS on courtesy visit to the Rector in her office on 25th June 2025. According to him ” We embarked on this journey to tour all the campuses in the south eastern states to see how our students are doing, to see to their welfare and to thank them for electing me as their leader”

The NANS president applauded the Rector for her giant strides in the area of infrastructure and maintenance of clean environment in the polytechnic.

“Let me say it without apology that this campus is one of the neatest and most organised campuses in this country”

He appreciated the Rector for her cordial relationship with staff unions on campus as well as the Student Union Government which he attributed as responsible for the prevailing peace in the Polytechnic.

“On the disturbing incident that happened recently in Oko Community, we issued a press statement calling for calm. I am also happy to hear from the school that no student lost their lives contrary to social media reports that some students died” he said.

He revealed that they will interface with the Commissioner of Police to sort out grey areas regarding the security of students.

In their separate speeches, the South East Coordinator of NANS, Comrade Ijeomah Obinna Charles and Students Union Government President of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Comrade Odumegwu Chinecherem Emmanuel applauded the Rector for her efforts to place Federal Polytechnic Oko in a global map, promising a continuous support to the Rector and the entire management of the institution. They encouraged the Rector not to be distracted from her mission to bring massive development to the Institution .

Responding, the Rector, Dr Chioma Awuzie welcomed the NANS president and his team and reiterated her commitment to the welfare of students. ” Our priority is to make the students happy for them to be good ambassadors of Federal Polytechnic Oko. Our priority is for them to be skill oriented and research oriented. Our priority is for them after graduation to be entrepreneurs that will be employing people”

She highlighted some of the steps she had taken to better the lot of students to include the reduction of school fees, establishment of the skill acquisition centre to train and empower students, construction of students recreation centre which is now 85% completed among others. Dr.Awuzie stated that Federal Polytechnic, Oko is a peaceful institution that has zero tolerance for cultism. “This polytechic is anti cultism. We always admonish our students to be studious, to take their studies seriously and refrain from fraternizing with bad eggs”

She urged students to take advantage of the school hostels while plans are underway to build more hostels in order to accommodate more students inside the campus and guarantee their safety.

On the shooting incident that happened in the community the previous week, the Rector stated that she has had a fruitful discussion with the Commissioner of police and assured that everything is being done to ensure that students are adequately protected. She restated that no student lost their lives during the fracas.

She promised to engage SUG Presidents that served under her administration who are not found wanting in good conduct as well as best graduating students whenever employment opportunity comes.
