The Federal Polytechnic, Oko, on 2nd September 2025 held a solemn candlelight procession in honour of its late Bursar, Mr. Stephen Udu (popularly known as Udummili), who recently passed on while in active service.
The procession, which followed the institution’s monthly prayer session, commenced at the Convocation Arena and attracted staff, students, and well-wishers. Participants carried lighted candles in silent tribute to the late Bursar, remembered for his humility, dedication, and service to the Polytechnic.



Speaking during the ceremony, the Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, described Mr. Udu as a diligent and loyal servant of the institution. “This candlelight procession is not just a ceremony but a heartfelt tribute to a man who gave his best in faithful service to Federal Polytechnic, Oko. We pray that his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in perfect peace,” she said.
There was also a session of tributes from members of management and staff. The Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr. Kenneth Ezekwe, spoke about his close friendship with the late Bursar. The Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Nwabu Ezemba, described her deep sense of loss, while the Acting Registrar Mr. Dominic Nwagwu, Mrs.Blessing Igboeli, Mr. Luke Nweke, and Mr. Christian Nze all highlighted his good character, humility, and commitment to duty. The SANIP Chairman, Comrade Nonso Obi, in his remarks, eulogized Mr. Udu’s good heart and described him as a rare personality in the institution.



The former Acting Rector, Dr. Chukwugekwu Ubaka, also shared his experience of working closely with Mr. Udu, praying God to grant his soul eternal rest. Representing Ebonyi State, Mr. Vincent Nwani appreciated the Rector for granting such a dignified mourning period for their colleague and prayed for the repose of his soul. Dr. Obiajulu Ofodile used the occasion to advise staff to learn from Mr. Udu’s exemplary life and improve their own attitudes and working relationships.
The ceremony ended with prayers for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family, colleagues, and friends.
