RECTOR PLEDGES TO SUPPORT FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OKO TAX CLUB IN QUIZ COMPETITIONS

Rector, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie has promised to sustain and support the institution’s tax club to ensure that students are sensitised on the need to pay tax as citizens.

Rector made the promise at her office when the delegation from the Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT) led by the Anambra state branch coordinator, Dr. Esosa Mbachu paid her a courtesy visit.

Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT) is a body comprising female members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) whose objectives include: assisting the CITN to achieve its laudable objectives; empower women to reduce poverty as well as increase their disposable income and educate women in particular and the public in general on taxation and the necessity for paying taxes.

While welcoming the delegation, the Rector, Dr. Chioma Awuzie applauded the SWIT for their continued support and sponsorship of Federal Polytechnic Oko tax club, calling on them to continue to encourage and educate the citizenry on the need to pay taxes.

She emphasised that there is peace and harmony among the principal officers, the unions and cordial relationship with the host communities, a gesture, she said, will guarantee academic excellence among the students.

Earlier, the SWIT branch coordinator, Dr. Esosa Mbachu commended the Rector for transforming the institution within a short period, stating that they are in Federal Polytechnic Oko for Students Tax week which features tax quiz competition.

She revealed that four tertiary institutions in Anambra state, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Federal College of Education ( Technical), Umunze, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam and Federal Polytechnic Oko will be participating in this year’s competition.

She further explained that the Society of Women in Taxation was formally inaugurated on 7th May, 2010 as an arm of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to serve as an umbrella body of the female members of the Institute and to meet the yearnings and aspirations of women.

According to her, SWIT has the mandate of building a society that will promote the interest of women in tax policy, law and practice in furtherance of the aim of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, adding that SWIT is made up of consultants and administrators.

She praised the students of Federal Polytechnic Oko who are members of the Tax club for their active participation in the tax quiz competition.

Earlier, the Head of Department of Accountancy , Dr Emma Ezenwafor who led the SWIT delegation to Rector’s Office gave a run down of activities of SWIFT in Federal Polytechnic Oko including the tax quiz competition organized by the body in 2023 between students of Federal Polytechnic Oko and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in which Federal Polytechnic Oko students took the 1st to 4th positions.

A former Dean, School of Financial Studies, Dr. Chikwelu Mbonu further explained that the Federal Polytechnic Oko tax club was the first registered tax club in Anambra state. He revealed that the Federal Inland Revenue Services has been bankrolling the quiz competition. He then appealed to the Rector to mount department of Taxation in Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
