FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OKO TO BENEFIT FROM TETFUND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTION

Federal Polytechnic Oko has been selected among the Tertiary Institutions that will benefit from the pilot phase of the Sustainable Energy Solution that is being sponsored by TETFund in Tertiary Institutions.

The need for Alternative Energy Supply in tertiary institutions across the country became imperative due to the incessant power outages and insufficient energy supply that tertiary Institutions have had to contend with over the years; which has seriously mitigated against effective academic and administrative activities.

The situation led to operating of diesel plant which comes with very high running cost and therefore unsustainable.

This unfortunate development seriously hampered productivity and efficiency of the Institutions and greatly affected research and innovation due to inaccessibility of critical facilities like laboratories, libraries etc.

Therefore, following presidential directive, Tertiary Education Trust fund (TETFund) in collaboration with Rural Electrification Agency inaugurated a high powered steering committee on alternative energy solution to undertake energy audit and technical assessment in tertiary institutions around the country and come up with recommendations. This steering committee has already concluded its assignment and presented their report to TETFund.

Federal Polytechnic Oko played host to the steering committee team led by Dr Adeola Eleri in May 2025. The Committee assessed the Polytechnic’s carrying capacity in terms of equipment in various departments and respective energy consumption and had extensive interaction with the Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie and other members of the Management. The high cost of running diesel plant by the Polytechnic came to the fore and it was noted to be unsustainable.

It will be recalled that the Rector had previously submitted a proposal to Rural Electrification Agency for implementation of alternative energy solution in Federal Polytechnic Oko. Inclusion of Federal Polytechnic Oko to benefit in the pilot phase of the alternative energy solution is a big relief and great aid to the Institution.

The Governing Council, Management, Staff and Students of Federal Polytechnic Oko remain sincerely grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We also wish to appreciate the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arch Sonny T. Echono for this great gesture. The public is rest assured that Federal Polytechnic Oko is committed to providing sustainable quality education that can be referenced nationally and beyond.
