Polytechnics in the country engage in varied kinds of sporting activities and participate in all types of competitions organized at both national and international levels such as Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA), Nigeria Polytechnic Senior Staff Games (NIPOSSGA) and West African Polytechnic Games (WAPOGA).
However, a survey of the history of sporting competitions at the Polytechnic before March, 2010 was characterized by poor performance at all levels of the competitions. The reasons for these were:
- Poorly constituted administrative sports organs
- Inadequate and non-availability of fund to support and execute sporting activities
- Lack of adequate or standard facilities and equipment
- Poor encouragement for athletes and staff
However, when Professor Godwin Onu administration assumed office in March 2010 the management immediately set up a committee to study the sports unit and find out the immediate and remote causes of poor performance which characterized the unit in the past. This bold step led to the reconstitution of the sports unit into a Directorate for effective administration and organization of the progamme.
Since then there are adequate provision of finance by the management for the procurement of sports equipment, facility development, sponsorship to competition/meetings as well as maintaining a complement of staff and the motivation of athletes.
The resultant effect of the above magnanimity and encouragement is relative excellent performance.
During the 2012 NIPOGA preliminary marches at the Delta State Polytechnic, the Polytechnic qualified in football, male volleyball, and handball (male and female). This was however the first time Federal Polytechnic, Oko qualified in football having beaten the South-South and South East zones.
During the NIPOGA proper, though we lost in football, the Polytechnic won one silver and one bronze medals in javelin (male and female) respectively.
