The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Councils of federal tertiary institutions which were dissolved last year. Among them is the 12th Governing Council of our Institution with Senator Engr. Barnabas Gemade OFR as Chairman. Other members of the inaugurated council include Martins Babale, Mrs. Ukel-Akeoli Oyaghiri, Hon. Hail Mary Aipoh, Mohammed Yushau (FME Rep), Mrs. Pamela Nwansoh and Dr. Uche Onyegbu (Ag. Rector)
The inauguration was performed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman. The minister charged the council members to ensure good management, healthy growth and development of their respective institutions. He further urged them to familiarize themselves with the relevant laws and ensure that all decisions and actions they take are in accordance with extant laws. “To this end, you should be abreast of the current acts of your various institutions, government policies, white papers (if any) , circulars, gazettes and other relevant documents relating to the Institutions and those of general application in MDAs”
He highlighted the appointment of principal officers as one of the challenges often faced by Governing Councils. He however admonished them to follow due process in the appointment of principal officers. “As a council, you must ensure that proper attention and priority are given to the relevant acts of the institutions and government guidelines for the process of such appointments as well as ensure fairness and transparency.”
Other members that will constitute the council include the Deputy Rector, five staff members from our Institution who will be elected by the Academic Board and Congregation respectively, Federal Polytechnic Oko alumni representative and host community representative. The Ag.Registrar will serve as Secretary to the Council.
